Information Letter for Parents

Enclosed in this information package you will find the following: 1) your child’s report card; 2) information regarding Summer School; 3) information regarding Student Retention; 4) school calendar for the 2017-2018 school year; 5) list of student fees for the 2017-2018 school year; 6) list of suggested school supplies, 7) health information form. I ask that you please take the necessary time to review this information as it provides answers to frequently asked questions. Please note that all of this information will be posted on our school website at www.symmesdarcy.com .
I also take this opportunity to wish you a safe and restful summer. To those of you who have children who are moving on from Symmes and D’Arcy, I wish you the very best; to those of you whose children will be returning in August, I look forward to continuing to work with you in the upcoming school year!
Please note that the pass mark for all courses is 60%
Please note that students in grade 10 and 11 will receive an official transcript in the mail from the Ministry of Education; the marks on the Ministry transcript serve as the official marks, as they have been subject to moderation by the ministry. It is also important to note that the transcript from the ministry will indicate whether or not ministerial credits have been issued (and how many). In the event a student does not pass a ministerial course, he/she does not receive ministerial credits.
Parents of students in grades 10 and 11 should expect to receive the official Ministry transcript in the mail by the 10th of July.
For the parents of Symmes students: the promotion policy at Symmes is based on level promotion. This means that in the event a student has not achieved competency (a final mark of at least 60%) in two of the three following courses (English, French, Math), s/he will be retained at the same grade level for the upcoming school year. Parents of students who are being retained will be notified by school administration before July 6th, 2017. Please note that students who are slated to be retained may attend summer school (information re: summer school follows below).
For the parents of D’Arcy McGee students: the promotion policy at D’Arcy is based on subject promotion. This means that in the event a student does not achieve competency in a given course, s/he will repeat the course the following school year. Parents will be able to determine which courses (if any) that their child has not been successful in by referring to the final report card and, for students in grades 10 and 11, the official transcript from the Ministry of Education.
August Information Packages, Transportation Information and Student Account Payment:
Information package distribution (including transportation information) and student fee collection for the 2017-2018 school year for all Symmes and D’Arcy McGee students will be held on the following dates:
- Wednesday, August 16th, 2017 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
- Thursday, August 17th, 2017 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
In order to reduce processing time, parents who wish to pay by cheque or post-dated cheques are asked to prepare the cheque(s) in advance, made payable to either Symmes Jr. High School or D'Arcy McGee High School. Clearly indicate your child's full name in the memo section of your cheque. To confirm your account balance, please contact Nadine Plourde 819-684-7472 (extension 2207).
Parents who were not able to attend the student information distribution evenings are asked to drive their child(ren) to school for their orientation day (dates below) and report to reception between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Office staff will be available to process your payment at that time and provide you with the necessary information for the 2017-18 school year.
We will begin the year with a staggered entry for our students, providing them with the opportunity to meet or become reacquainted with their classmates and staff. The staggered entry will be as follows:
- Tuesday, August 29th: Grades 7, 9, 10 and the Centre of Excellence students only.
- Wednesday, August 30th: Grades 8, 11 and Alternative Program students only.
During the staggered entry days, students will receive their timetables, student agendas, and other pertinent information. Level assemblies will be held for each grade level. Students will attend classes as indicated on their respective timetables; class times will be adjusted to accommodate assemblies and document distribution.
Please note that a decision has been taken to not hold a BarBQ on opening days; money that has been previously allocated for the student BarBQ will be used to purchase Environment Friendly Water Fill stations.
General Assembly Evenings:
Of note as well, General Assembly/Meet the Teacher Evenings will be held as follows:
- Wednesday, September 13th: Symmes General Assembly/Meet the Teacher evening at 6:30 pm in the Randy Smith Auditorium
- D’Arcy McGee’s General Assembly/Meet the Teacher evening will be held on Wednesday, September 20th at 6:30 p.m. in the Randy Smith Auditorium.
