2012-02-21

• Grad photo retakes will be held next Tuesday, February 28th after lunch in the courtyard entrance by Mr. Singfield’s office.  Those students who wish to have retakes must pay a $10.00 sitting fee.  If you have not had grad photos taken yet and wish to purchase a package, your sitting fee will be $22.00.
  

• In honour of Black History Month, every week this month you will learn about a new role model.  Harriet Tubman is noted for her role during the American Civil War and humanitarian efforts.  She was born into slavery and even sustained an injury to the head from a heavy weight that caused, among other conditions, narcolepsy and seizures.  Yet, she was a great advocate of women’s rights in the 1800’s and an active member of the Underground Railroad.  She risked her life to free the lives of 300 slaves.
  

• There will be a meeting for Mr. Fuchs' artist group this Wednesday at 12:30 in the Cafeteria.
  

• Burnt Toast auditions are being held today at lunch in the art room. If you were at the last Burnt Toast or at the Love is Louder concert you only need to inform Mr. Fuchs of the songs you plan to perform. Please report to the Art Room either today or tomorrow to let him know.
  

• Cheerleading Tryouts will be held today and Thursday.  Please come dressed with proper clothes. 
  

• Last week, Activity Day permission forms were handed out. If you did not get a form please see Ms. Richardson in room 214 or get copies outside of the reception area. Forms and money are to be handed in to Ms. Richardson by the end of the week.  All activities are on a first come basis, so sign up as soon as possible.
  

• All girls who were on last spring’s Flag Football team are asked to report to room 214 this Thursday at 12:00 sharp for a team picture.  Please be sure to have your team jerseys on for the photo.

• In honour of Black History Month, every week this month you will learn about a new role model.  Jesse Owens is reputed for having won 4 gold medals and setting records at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, to which Adolf Hitler was in attendance.  Hitler had been spreading his belief that Aryans were unbeatable, and so Owens’ accomplishments were seen as a “snub” to Hitler.  Jesse Owens remains one of the most famous athletes in history.
  

• Students who helped with the sale of roses are asked to drop by Ms. Hanna’s room 213 today at 12:00 sharp.
  

• Cheerleading try-outs begin today between 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.  You are to meet in the cafeteria dressed in proper clothing.
  

• There is a cheerleading meeting today at noon in Ms. Massey’s room for all cheerleaders.

• The Cadet girls’ volleyball practice is cancelled for tonight.
  

• If you would like to attend Heritage day on February 21st, you must return your signed permission slip to Mrs. George before the end of the day tomorrow.
  

• Students in Ms. Massey’s Ethics classes are reminded that they must hand in the discussion worksheet that was assigned for homework.  If you have not received it, please see Ms. Massey for a copy.

• Reminder to students that roses are available on a first-come-first-served basis every day in the cafeteria this week during lunch.  Purchases must be made by Thursday.  Delivery will take place on February 14th during Advisory.
  

• LOVE IS LOUDER CONCERT:  Thousands of high school students are bullied every year.  Help overpower bullying by coming to the Love is Louder concert on Friday, February 10th  - an event to raise awareness about bullying.  Tickets are only $3 or $5 at the door.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
  

• Would members of the boys soccer team, both rugby teams, cross-country and girls flag football teams please report to the Symmes gym this Friday at the beginning of lunch to take your team photos.   Please wear your jerseys.

• Congratulations to Liam Patrick Gallant who is D’Arcy’s Athlete of the Week.  Liam plays on the Juvenile boys hockey team. He is a leader on the defense unit, solid on both ends of the ice, and is used in every situation. Liam also made a game saving play by deliberately blocking a shot at the end of one game and sacrificing himself for the team.

• Welcome Macio Melo who is our guest artist who will be painting a mural with students from D’Arcy and Symmes in the South Parking lot stairwell at D’Arcy.  Students are asked to please not use this stairwell this afternoon, Thursday and Friday this week.

• All students participating in the mural project will be working on it on Wednesday afternoon, all day Thursday and Friday.  Participants are to meet in the Dance Studio at 1:00 on Wednesday and at 8:50 on Thursday and Friday.  If you would like to participate in the mural, submit a preliminary drawing and permission form to Ms. Levman in the Dance studio today.

• Kirsten Mulligan is D’Arcy’s Athlete of the Week.  Kristen is on the Juvenile Girls Soccer team and scored 5 goals in a 8-0 win over Du Versant last week. She is the team’s top goal scorer and has helped the Juvenile Girls team go undefeated so far this season.

• There will be a D’Arcy Band practice today after school.  Please do not be late.
  

• All students wishing to participate in Cross-Country this year are to report to room 216 on the D’Arcy side at 12:05 today for a brief meeting.  Practices will be held Tuesday mornings and Thursdays after school.
  

• The O Ambassadors will be having a bake sale all week in the cafeteria.  All proceeds will be donated to the Crisis in Africa.

• Students please note that D’Arcy school photos will be taken on Tuesday, September 13th in the library.  You will be called in alphabetical order by grade level.  Students must not wear green on this day in order to have pictures turn out properly. 
  

• Grade 9 students who graduated from Symmes last year are asked to please see Ms. Matthews if you would like a free full colour copy of the Symmes graduating class of 2011.
  

• Attention Ultimate Frisbee players:  there will be a meeting for any students interested in playing Ultimate Frisbee today in room 137 at 11:30 sharp.
