2010-03-09
  • Popcorn:  Reminder to students that Band members will be selling popcorn every Wednesday at lunch hour for only $2.00 a bag.  Help the band raise money for their provincial competition in Sherbrooke
  • A special thanks to the students and staff of Center of Excellence who made all the jello for the jello eating contest during winter carnival.
  • Rounders:  Advisory 101 plays advisory 201 in “Rounders” today. The game begins at 11:35 sharp in the gym.
  • Library:  Reminder that the library is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 5:00. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this quiet location to complete homework and do research for projects.
  • Peer Tutor:  Any student who would like to be paired with a peer tutor to get some help in a particular subject, speak to Mrs.Wilkinson. Peer tutoring can take place during advisory, lunch hour or after school.
  • “Once Upon A Mattress”:  Starquest players are presenting the musical “Once Upon A Mattress” the story of the Princess and the Pea at the end of this month.  On the afternoon of March 25th we will be offering a student matinee during 3rd and 4th period.  Students just pay $5.00 to see the show.  Tickets for this matinee will be available on a first come, first serve basis beginning next Monday.  Tickets for the regular evening performance will be on sale next week.
  • Hockey: The Symmes/D'Arcy Cadet hockey team will practice at Robinson arena on Wednesday from 3-4pm... Please bring your money for the Battle of Ontario, Ottawa Senators raffle tickets so a winner can be declared
  • Yoga club will meet tomorrow morning.  Please meet at 7:30 a.m. in the cafeteria.  Everyone is welcome to attend.
  • Yearbook:  All yearbook club members are asked to please meet in room 108 on Thursday at the beginning of lunch.  Please bring your lunches with you.

  • Advisors will be receiving a revised “Rounders” schedule today. Games will start tomorrow during advisory period with advisory 101 playing 201.
  • A special THANKS goes out to Advisory 101, Mrs. Lapierre and Ms. Russell for the effort and care they put into their attractive and informative Olympic Bulletin Board. It provided Symmes with daily updates of events and results. For their efforts they will be granted 10 advisory bonus points.
  • Congratulations to all students who participated in the Advisory Olympic Challenge last Friday before the break. Everyone had fun and showed great sportsmanship.  Points will be posted on the advisory scoreboard soon.

  • Found:  Several house keys have been found and left at Ms. Matthews’ office.  For those of you who have lost house keys, please check with Ms. Matthews as she may have yours.
  • Hockey:  The Symmes D'Arcy Cadet hockey practice scheduled for today at Robinson Arena at 3pm has been cancelled due to Parent Teacher interviews... Players are asked to see Mr. Price and confirm their rides for the Pontiac tournament on Wednesday...
  • Advisory Olympics:  Don't forget that this Friday we will be holding the Symmes Advisory Olympics in the morning with a dance in the afternoon. Activities will take place both indoors and outside so make sure you come prepared and dress appropriately!
  • Today is twin day. Get your picture taken with your twin in the cafeteria. Prizes will be awarded Friday for the Best match.
  • The Jello eating competition will be held today at 12:00 in the Symmesonian. Only those signed up and paid may participate. There will be 3 heats of 10 competitors.
  • Dance:  Don’t forget the dance on Friday afternoon. The cost is $2.00 at the door. All proceeds to Haiti Relief.

  • Carnival Week:  Today is the first day of Symmes Carnival Week. Student forum reps will be coming around to advisories to count participation points for pajama day.
  • Arm Wresting:  The last chance to sign up for the arm wrestling competition is today during morning break in the Symmesonian. Competitors will be divided by sex and weight category. Competition begins at 12:20 in the cafeteria. Mr. Shales and Ms. Dolan are among the competitors.
  • Would you still be my friend if I dressed like this:  Tomorrow is your chance to go all out and dress up for “Would you still be my friend if I dressed like this?” Participation points will be awarded to advisories.
  • Jello Eating:  Tomorrow is the competition at lunch hour. Get a partner and sign up today for 25 cents each
  • Congratulations to Mr.  Reids’ Benjamin girls basketball team who beat Hadley's grade 8 team in overtime on the weekend.
  • Symmes students in Ms. White’s (or Mr. Foster’s) Period 3 Phys. Ed. class (group 204-01) will be going outside for class today. Please dress appropriately.

  • ALL BALL HOCKEY PLAYERS....meet in the cafeteria at 4:30...games will begin at 5 pm and a schedule will be posted at lunch in front of the gym.
  • Basketball: M. Reid’s girls basketball team does not have practice today but plays Saturday at 10:00 and 2:30 at Nicolas Gatineau.
  • The Advisory Soccer Baseball schedule has been changed to start right after the March break. Advisors will receive a revised schedule.
  • CONGRATULATIONS to the Symmes double A girls' basketball team who defeated St. Alexandre in an exciting 38-35 victory last night. The team will meet De l'Ile tonight here at Symmes at 5:30.  Come on out and cheer on your Scorpions!
  • Winter Carnaval:  Next week is Winter Carnival Week at Symmes. Festivities begin Monday with Pajama day for advisory points. Sign up today in the Symmesonian for the arm wrestling competition which will be held in the cafeteria on Monday at lunch hour.  Competition will be separate for boys and girls and by weight divisions. Medals will be presented for the winners.
  • Hats off to all those who participated last week in Hats for Haiti. Together we raised $400 for the Red Cross to put towards relief in Haiti. 
  • Phys Ed.  Symmes students in Ms. White’s (or Mr. Foster’s) Period 3 Phys. Ed. class (group 204-01) will be going outside for class on Monday, February 22nd.  Please dress appropriately.
  • Rehearsal:  A reminder of Saturday's rehearsal for Once upon A Mattress.  Please see Mr. Toohey, Ms. Dolan or Ms. Beaton if you cannot attend.  Would Nick Hoffman please come to the auditorium at the beginning of lunch today.

  • Photos for teams, committees and clubs will start at 12:00 sharp in the Symmes gym and go through lunch – a schedule for these photos is posted on the cafeteria and gym doors.
  • ATTENTION ALL BALL HOCKEY PARTICIPANTS:
  • The ball hockey tournament will begin tomorrow at approximately 5 pm!!!!!...there will a mandatory meeting for all teams in the cafeteria at 4:30 pm.  You must be there.
  • A reminder to all...although you are responsible for your own food for dinner and breakfast,  if you would like pizza for dinner you can bring in $2 per slice (see Ms. Rossi or Kelsey Abbott before 6 pm.) and there will be muffins for sale on Saturday morning.
  • Anyone who has not brought in their permission form to stay overnight, please do so ASAP.
  • All sleeping bags and equipment that is brought in ahead of time can be stored in the gym balcony.
  • Please don't forget your un-taped sticks and goalie equipment
  • Basketball:  M. Reid’s girls basketball team does not have practice Friday but plays Saturday at 10:00 and 2:30 at Nicolas Gatineau.
  • Soccer:  A notice to all members of the Symmes 2 soccer team: the game against St. Joseph this week has been cancelled.  I repeat, the Symmes 2 soccer game against St. Joseph this week has been cancelled and will be rescheduled."
  • The First Nations group will be meeting in the Dance studio off the cafeteria this morning. Amber Asp Chief, National Aboriginal Youth Ambassador and competitive Hoop dancer will be visiting.
  • The Advisory Soccer Baseball schedule has been changed to start right after the March break. Advisors will receive a revised schedule.
  • Symmes Winter Carnival Week is next week. Check out the posters listing all the activities. Advisory points will be awarded for participation.

  • Photo Retakes:  Students please note that photo retakes are taking place tomorrow beginning at 9:00 a.m.   You are reminded not to wear green clothing.  For those grade 8 students who did not have their first graduation picture taken, you must bring in your $10.00 sitting fee. Lists of students who are missing photos are posted around the school.   Reminder as well that all students must have their picture taken, whether you plan to purchase a package or not.  Teams, committees and club pictures will start at 11:30 in the Symmes gym and go through lunch – a schedule for these photos will be posted on the cafeteria and gym doors.
  • Band Members:  Would All Symmes band members and Symmes/D’Arcy Jazz band members bring their uniforms tomorrow for the yearbook picture at 11:30.
  • Student Forum:  There will be student forum meeting today at 12:00 in room 235.

  • Cast Call:  There will be a short but very important meeting for the cast of Once Upon A Mattress today at lunch in the auditorium.  Please come at the beginning of lunch it will only take a few moments.   Also please remember that there is NO rehearsal this Saturday but you do have a rehearsal on Monday from 9 to 3.  
  • Basketball:  Reminder Mr. Reid’s girls basketball team has practice.

  • Youtube:  Mr. Fuchs’ Advisory is making a YouTube video during 4th period on Friday, February 12th to raise funds for Haiti. In order to participate, you must donate $2 (if you are wearing red and blue), or $4 if you aren’t. You must pay your 4th period teacher to leave and go to the D’Arcy gym. We are asking you all to wear red and blue because those are the colours of the Haitian flag. Students who do not donate will not be permitted to participate and will remain in class with their teacher.
  • French Public Speaking: The meetings for French public speaking will be held every day 1 and 7 at lunch time in room 138.  The first meeting is being held today.  Come to this information meeting to receive the info package and discover what it’s all about!  It is open to grade 9, 10 and 11 students in regular or immersion French.
  • Basketball:  Come out and cheer on your senior double A boys basketball team here this Friday at 6:00 p.m as they take on Nicholas Gatineau.    The loudest fan or group of fans can win a large pizza from McEwen’s.  Forms are available from your advisory.  Teachers are reminded to please submit your completed forms to Mr. CReid.
  • Roses:  Please note that students who paid for Valentine’s Day roses but did not write the last name of the person they are sending them to, please see Ms. Hanna in room 146 or Emily Brennan at lunch today.  Roses and Messages without a last name cannot be delivered otherwise.  Roses will be distributed during advisory today.

Desaulniers and Mr. Schwartz for cheering the girls on.  Excellent job girls and good luck on your games next Sunday!

Please make sure to respect their hard work and not touch the board as it will be very exciting for all of us to follow.  Feel free to contribute any highlights or ideas to Ms. Lapierre. Well done Advisory 101!
