Symmes-D'Arcy McGee Breakfast Program
The staff of both schools has noticed over the years that an alarming number of students are not eating nearly enough throughout the day. Through discussions with the students, we have learned that many are waking up in the morning, too tired to make and eat breakfast. The staff has also noticed that on top of that, a number of students are not eating lunch as well. For some reason, it is particularly hard to get teenagers to eat on a regular basis at school. It is patently obvious that poor eating habits and poor nutrition have a direct affect on attention span and lowered scholastic performance. <more info>

- Our Symmes and D'Arcy Peer Helpers would like to remind you that this week is Canadian "Mental Health Week". Did you know that 1 in 5 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 18 report a mental disorder, substance abuse or learning disability? So, if you're feeling stressed, depressed or overwhelmed, talk to someone about it. This week, peer helpers will be in the cafeteria at lunch time so don’t hesitate to go up to them to chat. If you would like to have a private and confidential appointment with a peer helper, please see Ms. Smith.
- Would you like to know and better understand your personal style of learning? Come by the computer lab today at the beginning of lunch. Ms. Smith will walk you through a quick online quiz which will help give you some suggestions for studying and exam preparation that will work best for you and your learning style!
- We are in need of running shoes for our shoe drive! Shoes are donated to Sole Responsibility.
- Our goal is 50 pairs by FRIDAY! Bring in a pair and you will get a freezie for these hot days! See Ms. Kevan with your donation.
- Anyone interested in playing in a rugby tournament this Friday please see Mr. Reid or Mrs. White. Please do not forget to get your money in for the Tony’s promise and Dominic Richmire fundraisers.

Information Specific to Symmes:
i2P Expreso de los Andes Expedition will feature a 3-tier challenge with a purpose of educating, inspiring and empowering administrators, teachers and students to take on a Health & Physical Activity Challenge. Ray Zahab and Kevin Vallely will attempt to run across the South American continent from Concón, Chile to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Simultaneously, school Principal George Singfield will commit to and be training for upcoming challenges of his own - the Ottawa Half Marathon and a 50km trail running event in fall 2012! 'Principal George' has already enthused and inspired many teachers to follow in his footsteps and prepare for challenges of their own...will you?
With these challenges in place, i2P's goal is to encourage students to take on their very own running programs! Be sure to check this interactive website for updates, which includes an expedition live tracker, live videoconferencing, daily video blogs, photos and experiments. We will also learn from Dr. Greg Wells how the human body adapts (or degrades) during extreme endurance. Dr. Wells will gather data on Ray as he runs and give relevance to the data collected for everyday activity.
STUDENT CHALLENGE:
Students are challenged to take on the 8-week Health & Physical Activity Challenge for a healthy and physically active 2012! Registration and information can be found under Student Challenge tab. Participating administrators, teacher and students are encouraged to share their story and submit their photos & videos.
Be ready to be inspired! Good luck and please share your stories and progress with us!
Homeschooling 2012-2013
Applications for Homeschooling for the 2012-2013 school year should be received no later than June 30th to ensure that a signed contract exists prior to the start of the new school year. Parent(s) / legal guardian(s) are asked to complete the attached Contract
Parent(s) /Guardian(s),
Exam time is rapidly approaching! The third term and exams make up a large portion of students' final evaluation so, we cannot stress enough that students take the exam process seriously.
Most subjects are already into preparation for exams and many begin process exams before the scheduled exams. We would like to mention these facts and emphasize the importance of student attendance. If and when students miss part of an exam, the logistics of making up the parts missed can be complicated.
As a reminder, if a student misses a final exam, she/he will be asked to provide documentation to this effect (medical certificate, etc.)
We wish all students the best of luck during the exam process.
